The focus of TS was the introduction into the diversity of animal venoms and the concepts, methods, and techniques used by venom researchers to address fundamental questions about the biology and evolution of venoms, as well as to exploit their pharmacological properties for applied uses, such as the development of new drugs.
• Mobilitet i Stafit për Trajnim në kuadër të European Venom Network EUVEN COST ACTION CA19144 (05-07.07.2023): Training school (2) “Venom extractions methods – manual vs electric stimulations vs venom gland dissection, why does it matter?” The Venom extractions methods Training School was a hands off in practice with the topics on venomous animals, the venom extraction methods and their venom toxicity, covering: Spider/centipede venom, Bee venoms, Scorpion venom, Cone snail venoms, Hands on practical milking manually cone snail and spiders, Field trip to collect spiders and scorpions, Milking of spiders and scorpions using the electric stimulation method, venom concentrations estimations using the nano spectrophotometer, injections of venom into insects and observation of venom effects/symptoms on injected insects, Snake venom, A company’s perspective on venom extraction ending with the open debate on the pros and cons of each of the venom extraction methods. The training school was held in the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS), Montpellier, FRANCE.
• Mobilitet i Stafit për Kerkim Shkencor në kuadër të European Venom Network EUVEN COST ACTION CA19144 (01-30.09.2023). Short Term Scientific Mission (STSM) “Widow Venoms: Performing Venom extractions, Assessing Venom composition and developing toxicity screening”. During the research work of this STSM, I performed the laboratory procedures for spider venom extraction using electrostimulation and venom gland removal. I performed Western blot/SDS page gels to check for venom variations at the inter and intraspecific levels; conducted comparative toxicity assessments using various in-vivo arthropod models, including the promising new model Galleria mellonella; learned how to infer LD50 and ED50 values from the toxicity assays we performed using Probit models on R; performed swabs and cultures of the bacterial flora present on the chelicerae (fangs) of spiders, which may inform us on the type of infections developed by spider envenoming victims at the bite site. The target species are the members of the comb-footed spider family Theridiidae, and more specifically members of the genus Steatoda (i.e. False widows) and the European Black widow Latrodectus tredecimguttatus. The Scientific Mission is held in the VenomLab of the University of Galway, IRELAND.
• Mobilitet i Stafit për Trajnim në kuadër të European Venom Network EUVEN COST ACTION CA19144 (06-07.03.2024): Workshop “So we got a patent, what now?” organized by CA19144 "European Venom Network”. The workshop on technology commercialization and IP utilization in venom research includes section on What does your start-up need to be ready for investors, the evaluation criteria and process of evaluating and supporting startups before Biotech Fund decides to invest; Unorthodox antidote – toxin development and applications in the army using synthetic chemicals as antidotes; Getting patent to commercial application in academia with the bottlenecks of startups and pros and cons of academics approach to applications; Pentapharm AG, the largest producer and supplier of purified and synthetic snake venom enzymes for cosmetic industry and medical applications; and the Roundtable and a case study workshop with i&i Prague representatives with a possibility to receive a project feedback and potentially an investment. The workshop will be held in the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Prague, Czechia, on behalf of the “European Venom Network”, EUVEN COST Action CA19144.
• Mobilitet i Stafit për Kerkim Shkencor në kuadër të European Venom Network EUVEN COST ACTION CA19144 (01-21.09.20243). Short Term Scientific Mission (STSM) “Spiders and Scorpions Venom: Experiments on the enzymatic activity, HPLC purification and SDS-PAGE profile”. During the research work of this STSM, I learned and performed new techniques and methods related to the venom composition, enzymatic activity and SDS-PAGE profile of several scorpions, and spiders of known or unknown venom profile. I performed the laboratory procedures for hundreds of scorpions venom extraction using electrostimulation, I performed enzymatic activity of scorpion and spider venom, I used the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to purify scorpion and spider venom, I used the SDS-PAGE to separate different venom components, I preserved the crude and purified venom for further studies. The Scientific Mission is held in the VenomLab of the University of Eskisehir Osmangazi , Turkey, directed by Assoc. Prof. Figen Caliskan, on behalf of the “European Venom Network”, EUVEN COST Action CA19144.
